Word Rings
A word ring is a list of Bedrock Words (also known as “Popcorn Words” and “Sight Words”). There are 200 words that your child should know by the end of Grade 1.
Each student is given their own individualized ring with two sections.

Zoomers
These are words that your child already knows. By having your child read their “Zoomers” first, they are practicing words again and feeling confident as they come to their “New Words”. As your child learns new words, they are added into their “Zoomers”. Please do not feel like your have to review all zoomers! Practicing 5-7 Zoomers before moving to “New Words” is enough. |
New Words
These are words that your child will be practicing. They should know the word within seconds of seeing it. Please review “New Words” each night with your child. The words will be changed on a weekly/bi-weekly basis. |
Some important notes on your child’s Word Ring:
▪The word ring goes home and comes back daily. Each student has identified a “small pocket” in their backpack where they can keep their word ring.
▪I have a record of all of the words on your child’s word ring. Please do not move words or remove words.
▪The more words a child knows, the less words they need to sound out when they are reading – thus making learning to read a bit easier. I have attached blank bingo cards and information about games you can play with your child and their words. The words you should use in your games should be the “New Words” they are working on.
▪ After your child learns all of the Gr. 1 words, we work on Gr. 2 words. Your child will give back their word ring when they know all Gr. 1 and Gr. 2 words.
