Reading Corner
This page will contain many resources for parents as well as students at home as they become the best readers they can be. All of the visual materials are used in the classroom (phonics chart/reading hand). I hope you find this site useful!
Bedrock Words
Bedrock Words, otherwise known as "Sight Words" are the words that POP up most frequently in books. Your child should know these words right away. Typically these words are difficult to sound out. Please visit my Bedrock Website to find valuable resources to work with your child on their Bedrock Words.
Your child will be bringing home a WORD RING each day. On their Word Ring they will have Zoomers and New Words.
Zoomers - Words that your child already knows. These words build your child's confidence and gets them ready for their new words.
New Words - These are words that your child is practicing. There is about 5 new words at a time.
**The more Bedrock Words your child knows, the less words they will get stuck on when they are reading! They can focus more of their attention on those really tricky words!

The Reading Hand
The Reading Hand is a MUST HAVE wherever your child will do their homework each night. The Reading Hand is a visual reminder of strategies that your child can use when they are decoding unfamiliar words! Just click on the hand to print out a reading hand for your house!
Phonics Charts
As students are beginning to read more and more challenging words, we encourage them to look for patterns, or traits they already know! These phonics charts provide pictures to give students visual reminders of different sounds that a letter (or letters) can make. Teachers have the large phonics charts posted on the wall during reading group. Students are provided with the small charts to utilize as they read.
Not only are these charts used in the classroom, but our reading teachers (Mrs. B and Mrs. L) are constantly referring to them as well. The consistency across our team is very important to assist students as they read. I would encourage you to print out the large or small charts for your own house!
**Special Thanks to Mrs. B for creating these charts for our students!

Phonics Sorting Cards
Students benefit from sorting pictures by their sound because they find similarities and differences amongst words. Students will also be able to recognize patterns in words.
Practicing Sorts at Home
When you get a set of sorting cards, please cut them out and creating headings for each sort. For example, when creating a short vowel sort, put the short vowels at the top of the chart. Then, ask your child to sort the pictures based on what vowel sound they hear.
Where Can I Get Sorts?
Many parents have scanned sorts. They will all be available through e-mail. Please e-mail me and let me know what specific sort/sorts you would like me to send you.
