Unit 1 - Informational Text vs. Literature/Stories
Approximate Dates: September- Mid October
-Students will learn the difference between informational text and literature.

Unit 2 - Story Elements
Approximate Dates: Mid October-Mid November
-Students will identify story elements in literature. We will focus on: character/s, setting, kickoff (problem), main events, solution, tie up (feelings/lesson learned).
Unit 3 - Retell
Approximate Dates: Mid November-December
-Students will identify story elements in literature. We will focus on: character/s, setting, kickoff (problem), main events, solution, tie up (feelings/lesson learned). I will continue to use Braidy (our storyteller) as a tool to help students retell. I have taken the parts of Braidy and put them into a retelling sequence for students to help them to retell the story.
-Students will retell a story using story elements.

Unit 4 - Compare/Contrast Characters Experiences
Approximate Dates: January-early February
-Students will compare and contrast the adventures of different characters in books
Example: The Snowy Day Vs. Snowmen At Night
In both stories the characters had snowball fights.
In one story the main character was a boy named Peter. In the other story the characters were snowmen.
Unit 5 - Informational Books: Main Topic/Key Details
Approximate Dates: Early February -Mid March
-Students will identify the main topic of a text and provide key details.
-Students will begin to write informational books with a topic and a few details about the topic, and a sense of closure. You may see your child writing an informative paragraph during this unit.
Unit 6 - Informational Books: Locating Information
Approximate Dates: Mid March-April
-Students will be able to identify key facts or information in a text by using the table of contents, headings, and glossary. This will assist them in answering research questions.
-Students will learn how to paraphrase information that they read.
Unit 7 - Informational Books/Writing: Sharing Information
Approximate Dates: May-June
-Students will be able to compare two informational books/sources on the same topic.
-Students will add drawings, captions, diagrams, and labels to help clarify information in their writing.
