"I'll cut it in half Mommy" - Troy
I asked him how he would fit the cheese on. First, he jumped down off his chair and ran to the silverware drawer. Next, he pulled out a knife (don't worry...it was a knife safe for kids!). Then, he cut the piece of cheese and said "I'll cut it in half, Mommy. I put this side of cheese on this cracker and this side on the other cracker." Finally, he gave me a 1/2 of a cracker with 1/2 of a piece of cheese. He gave himself the other 1/2 of the cracker with the cheese. He said "One for you and one for me".
I was so so so impressed with Troy's ability to share, but even more impressed with his mathematical thinking. He was using fractions when he was eating. This got ME thinking - I wonder when my students are thinking about fractions. Do you ever need to split something up evenly? How many people did you have to share with?
Students and Families:
Post your stories about how you have used fractions to create a fair share.
