Today we read the Scholastic News titled Searching for the Santa Maria. We learned that Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492. The Santa Maria sunk 500 years ago and has never been found...until recently! An explorer named Barry Clifford thinks he may have found pieces of the Santa Maria! The information is coming home today. Please ask your child what was the same and what was different about these two explorers. The Venn Diagram is small, but it gives you an idea for what we did together in class.

What a busy week we are looking at! Monday Oct 6th - The Aiken Coat Drive begins. Please send in coats that you would like to donate to others in need. All sizes are needed. Tuesday Oct 7th - Stuffed Animal Day! We are so excited that we have earned our 25th Golden Feather. We have decided as a class that we would like to have Stuffed Animal Day at school. Your child is welcome to bring their stuffed animal to school. We'll even be celebrating my birthday with some cone shaped birthday hats (to go along with our Geometry theme in Math!!). To learn more about how we earn Golden Feathers, please visit: http://keegan3.weebly.com/our-classroom-community.html Wednesday Oct 8th - Our 1st Aiken Assembly. Please have your child wear their Aiken Shirt. If they do not have one you can contact the PTO to purchase one OR just have your child wear a blue shirt. If you have an extra Aiken Shirt I'm sure another child would appreciate borrowing one for the assembly. At our assembly we will be learning more about how we can be WISE Aiken Citizens. WISE Aiken Citizens are Respectful, Responsible, and Safe! In addition to busy events, we will also continue to work on our Pumpkin Trouble story in class. Please ask your child how they made their story interesting. Some things they might say: -We used adjectives to describe our pumpkin (orange, big, bumpy) -We used a sound word and made the text look fun! Families - Please comment below if you'd like to share anything with the class. Do you have a question for them about how we are being WISE in the classroom, cafeteria, hallway?
Reading Comprehension: We have been reading a book called Awesome Autumn. It is an information book because it teaches you about Autumn. One fact that we learned is that insects migrate during Autumn (such as Monarch Butterflies). We also learned about different types of leaves. Math We’ve been learning about some addition strategies: -draw a picture -counting up (big number first) -number line addition We have also been experimenting with shapes. We have been working on Pattern Block puzzles like the turtle and the snake. Muscle Memory Mrs. Scelia told us all about our muscle memory. Sometimes when we learn to write letters and numbers our muscles write them the wrong way. STORY – Troy and His Muscle Memory Mrs. Scelia told us about when Troy was a baby and she kept the laundry basket in his room. He always knew where it was. One day when Troy was 2 Mrs. Scelia moved the laundry basket into the bathroom closet and Troy couldn’t find it. For DAYS and DAYS Troy went into his room and thought the laundry basket was there…but it wasn’t. He had to retrain his brain and muscles to walk to the bathroom. This is true for us because our muscles have been trained to write some of our numbers and letters backwards. We must RETRAIN our brains and muscles to do it the right way. A question for our families: Was there ever a time when YOU had to retrain your brain or muscle memory? Please comment on our post and let us know. We love to hear from our families. Love, Mrs. Scelia's Fabulous 1st graders |
Objective:The objective of our classroom blog is to keep families aware of classroom happenings! This way when you ask your child what they have been doing in school they can't say "nothing"! Archives
